Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor consists of a series of muscles that form a sling to help support organs located in the pelvic area, such as the bladder and large intestine. These muscles assist with maintaining urinary and fecal continence, as well as assisting with sexual function. There are many reasons as to why an individual will develop pelvic floor dysfunction. Some of the reasons include: sexual trauma, childbirth, poor bowel/bladder habits, and physical trauma to the pelvic area.

 

Symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction: 

• Urinary/fecal incontinence 

• Pain with intercourse 

• Pain with physical examinations 

• Constipation/Straining 

• Pain with urination 

• Feeling of pressure in the pelvic region

 

 

 Treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction:

• Manual Therapy

• Biofeedback 

• Electric Stimulation 

• Core Exercises 

• Stretching of muscles around the pelvic region
